Planning Your Vancouver Helicopter Elopement

Some couples don’t dream about a ballroom. They dream about standing on 5000 feet up and above the clouds wind moving through the bride’s dress, and nothing around them but mountains.

If that sounds like the kind of wedding you have been imagining, you’re probably also wondering how it actually works. Where do you go? What does the day look like? What happens if the weather changes?

We’re Cetus Photo, a Vancouver based wedding photography studio, and we’ve spent years photographing Helicopter elopements across the BC coastal mountains. In this guide, we’re walking you through a real wedding day we photographed in Squamish from start to finish, along with the planning tips we wish every couple knew before booking. Think of this as the article to read before your adventure begins.

A Real Squamish Helicopter Elopement: Hour by Hour

1:00PM — Leave Vancouver

We departed downtown Vancouver around 1:00PM. The drive up the Sea to Sky Highway to Squamish takes roughly one to one hour depending on traffic and where you start.

2:00 PM — Arrival at the First Location: A Quiet Squamish Trailhead

Squamish is full of beautiful hidden spots tucked between the mountains, forest trails, and riversides. For this ceremony, we hiked about 30 minutes to reach a quiet place where the couple could exchange vows completely surrounded by nature. And trust us — don’t hike in your wedding shoes. Bring proper hikers or trail runners, then change when you arrive.

2:30 PM — A Quiet Squamish Ceremony Spot

Squamish has so many beautiful hidden spots tucked between the mountains, along quiet trails, and beside the river. For this ceremony location, we hiked for about 30 minutes to reach a peaceful little viewpoint. It felt private, natural, and perfect for vows, elopements, engagement sessions, or portraits with a quieter, more intimate feeling.

3:30 PM — Drive to Squamish Municipal Airport

After paperwork was signed and we drove about 30 minutes to Squamish Municipal Airport, where our long time helicopter partner Black Tusk Helicopter Inc was waiting. We always recommend checking their website directly for current pricing, flight time options, and booking . Build at least 30–45 minutes of buffer between your ceremony location and your wheels up time.

4:30 PM — Wheels Up

After arriving at the airport, we had a quick safety briefing before boarding. The pilot walked everyone through how to safely enter and exit the helicopter and then the adventure officially began. The moment the helicopter lifted off was honestly one of the most exciting parts of the day. There’s always this little rush of adrenaline when the ground drops away and the mountains start opening up below you.

5:00 PM — Landing on the Mountain

The weather was on our side that day. For mid-September in the mountains, around 10°C with clear skies and only a light wind felt pretty much perfect. We had just over an hour on the mountaintop. Many flights only allow 20–40 minutes on the ground depending on weather, fuel, and the operator’s schedule, so having that much time up there felt like a gift.

6:30 PM — Wrapping Up with an Unexpected Sunset

We wrapped up the mountain portion of the day and started driving back.On the way home, the sunset suddenly became too beautiful to ignore. The sky was soft, golden, and honestly too rare to just drive past. So I asked the couple if they wanted to stop by the ocean for one more set of sunset portraits. They said yes right away. Those last photos by the water became one of our favorite parts of the day. As photographers, moments like this are exactly why I love what I do — noticing a little bit of magic, chasing it together, and documenting our couples at their happiest.
